Physiotherapy is an important part of the treatment of patients in the critical care unit (ICU). Physiotherapy's involvement in the ICU used to be restricted to respiratory control, but rehabilitation and mobilisation have become a top focus for patients admitted to the ICU in the previous decade. Deconditioning (particularly muscle weakness) rather than pulmonary function has been linked to reduced functional status following an ICU stay in studies.
In CureRehab critically ill patients, our physiotherapists are in charge of preventing and treating deconditioning (musculoskeletal function), as well as managing the respiratory system (keep lung capacity, increase oxygenation and ventilation, and optimise secretion clearance). In order to do so, a valid and accurate assessment of respiratory disorders, deconditioning, and related issues is required. Patients in the ICU receive the most suitable physiotherapy treatment for their condition, and this intervention is progressed appropriately, thanks to detailed and regular assessments by the physiotherapist.
